Frequently Asked Questions
What is CO2 and how does it affect climate change?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) gas is referred to as a “greenhouse gas” because it allows sunlight to enter the atmosphere and, like a greenhouse, keeps the heat emitted by human activity trapped inside the atmosophere. This has a warming effect on the planet and upsets the natural balance of ecosystems. CO2 is emitted by most human activities and technologies such as cars, planes, industrial processes, factories and energy production. It is the major cause of climate change in the world.
What are greenhouse gases?
Often referred to as GHGs, the major greenhouse gases that affect climate change are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone. Human activity has greatly increased the amount of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
What is a carbon credit?
Carbon credits (aka offsets) are a mechanism to offset carbon emissions in one place by eliminating it from another place to produce a net carbon output of zero. Carbon Harmony uses offsets administered by the Chicago Climate Exchange.
What types of projects has Carbon Harmony offset in the past?
We have done carbon footprint analysis and offsets for the Sasquatch! Music Festival, Outside Lands Music Festival, KGO Eco Live, the product line for Just Desserts, and an energy awareness project for Oracle Open World.
What methodologies does Carbon Harmony use?
Carbon Harmony’s Offsets are calculated following regulations made by The World Resources Institute, US Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration, and in-house methodologies by Carbon Harmony’s expert staff in special situations.
What associations is Carbon Harmony part of?
Carbon Harmony is a founding member of the Business Council for Climate Change (BC3) and an associate members of the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX).
