Outside Lands Music Festival

Treasure Island Music Festival 2009. Carbon offsets and calculations

August 28-30, 2009

San Francisco, CA

Carbon Harmony calculated the amount of the carbon dioxide emitted during the three day music festival held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Reducing environmental impact was a priority of the festival, and several concert-wide initiatives were instilled to make Outside Lands one of the largest carbon neutral events in the country.

Carbon offsets were an essential piece of this puzzle, as it was important to consider emissions that factored in from many directions. In addition to personal offsets available to purchase with tickets, the festival purchased enough offsets to account for all emissions created by this event.

Carbon offsets were purchased to compensate for the GHG emissions generated by:

  • All attendees fuel consumption
  • All the electricity produced by the biodiesel generators
  • All artists fuel consumption
  • All staff vehicles and delivery trucks fuel consumption
  • All material waste from food and beverages

Featured performances include Dave Matthews Band, Ween, Silversun Pickups, Cage the Elephant, Atmosphere, and Street Sweeper Social Clubs.

How does it work?

This year, Carbon Harmony will be funding projects that reduce GHG emissions. They will include methane collection and combustion projects that work to convert methane gas from animal waste into clean electricity. This internationally recognized process offers two benefits: GHG reduction and renewable energy generation. Chicago Climate Exchange verifies and approves the procedures to ensure they comply with international protocols.

*The estimated figures for fuel consumption, energy consumption, and the resulting GHG emissions are based on attendance and energy data from Treasure Island Music Festival and the official statistics from the U.S. government, made available by the U.S. Department of Energy and Energy Information Administration.
